Welcome
to Mendlingtal in Göstling/Ybbs

It was – and still is – the power of water that has shaped the region around Göstling, our economy and our culture over the centuries. Water carved the mountains, valleys and gorges, enabled the forests essential for iron production to grow, powered mills and hammer forges, and made it possible to transport felled logs to charcoal sites and ironworks.

Let yourself be transported into another world:

Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of water, enjoy the fresh air along the stream, wade through one of the pools and admire the lush greenery on the riverbanks. In doing so, you will follow in the footsteps of our ancestors, who, through careful observation of nature and practical experience, created remarkable engineering achievements: hammer forges, timber drifting facilities, dams (Klausen), mills, paths through the wilderness, and the nearly 200-kilometre-long Vienna First Spring Water Pipeline, whose aqueducts blend harmoniously into the natural landscape.

Along the Timber Trail

The 3.5 km themed trail begins at the village pond in Lassing and is easy to walk for the whole family. At the beginning, the route includes some steps, which are connected by well-secured hillside walkways and numerous wooden bridges.

Next to Ticket Office 1, you can visit the historic blacksmiths’ journeymen’s house with its original “Rauchkuchl” (smoke kitchen) and an exhibition opposite, illustrating the living conditions of the blacksmiths’ journeymen and lumberjacks. Here you will also find a fully operational Venetian frame saw and a blacksmith’s workshop.

The spectacular timber drifting facility awaits you in the first of three narrow, dramatically carved gorges. Between the gorges, small valley basins reveal true natural paradises, where winding streams flow through lush riverside forests, creating an enchanting wilderness.

The reconstructed Mendlingbach dam (Klause) creates a small timber drifting pond, whose stored water was once essential for transporting logs downstream. Further along, you will reach a large spring and a fully operational historic mill dating back to the previous century.

At the end of the trail, the former lumberjack settlement of Hof welcomes you with its historic Hammerherr Manor House, where you can enjoy traditional regional cuisine after your hike. A children’s playground is located directly next to the inn.

From the end point in Hof, you can either walk back through the valley or call the “Mendlingtal Taxi”.

If you prefer to follow the natural flow of the water, you can also start your hike at the Manor House (Ticket Office 2).
